Charging should work for everyone. Yet many stations are designed without considering drivers who use wheelchairs, have limited strength or reach, or have visual or hearing impairments. Small design choices make a big difference.
Common barriers
- Chargers placed on raised kerbs or behind wheel stops.
- Narrow bays with no space to get out of the car or move a wheelchair.
- Heavy, stiff cables that are hard to lift and plug in.
- Screens, card readers and buttons placed too high.
- Instructions that are hard to read or only on a small screen.
What accessible charging looks like
- Level, step-free access from the bay to the charger, with no kerbs in the way.
- Wider bays with space beside the vehicle.
- Controls at a reachable height for a seated user.
- Lighter cables and cable management that reduces the weight to lift.
- Clear, high-contrast instructions and screens readable in sunlight.
- App and QR start, so drivers can control charging from their phone.
- At least one accessible bay at larger sites, clearly marked.
Tips for drivers
- Check station photos and details in the app before travelling.
- Use app or QR start to avoid reaching for screens.
- Call support if you need help with a cable or connector; tell us which station needs improvement.
Our commitment
EVee Buddy considers accessibility when designing new sites and welcomes feedback on how existing stations can improve.
