Charging an EV at home vs. relying on public chargers

2 Nov 2026 · 5 min read · EVee Buddy Team

Before buying an EV, the biggest practical question is where you will charge. For most owners the answer is mainly at home, with public chargers for longer trips. But that is not possible for everyone, and public-only charging can work too with some planning.

Charging at home

  • Cheapest: you pay your household electricity rate, usually well below public charging prices. See costs per kilometre.
  • Most convenient: plug in overnight and start every day full.
  • Gentle on the battery: slower AC charging generates less heat.
  • Needs: a dedicated parking spot, a safe electrical supply, and sometimes permission from your housing society.

Relying on public chargers

  • Higher cost per km, though usually still cheaper than petrol.
  • Takes planning: you need reliable chargers near home, work or regular routes.
  • Time: a fast charger takes 30 minutes or more; slower chargers take hours.
  • Works well if: you have a charger at work, at a mall you visit often, or near home.

The mix most owners use

  • Home or workplace charging for daily driving.
  • Public fast charging for road trips and the occasional top-up.
  • Destination charging at hotels and restaurants when travelling.

If you can't charge at home

  1. Ask your housing society about shared charging. See charging for apartments.
  2. Ask your employer about workplace charging.
  3. Check the EVee Buddy app for reliable stations within a few minutes of home and work.
  4. Plan one or two fast-charging sessions a week around errands or meals.

A quick self-check

  • How many km do you drive on a typical day?
  • Where does your car park overnight and during the day?
  • How many reliable chargers are within 5 km of those places?

If you drive a moderate distance daily and have a charger at home or work, EV ownership is easy. If not, a reliable public charger close to your routine makes all the difference.
