Measuring ROI: the KPIs every charge point operator should track

31 Oct 2026 · 6 min read · EVee Buddy Team

A charging network produces a lot of data. The skill is knowing which numbers matter. These key performance indicators (KPIs) show whether each site is earning, where problems are and when to invest more.

Usage

  • Utilisation: hours or energy delivered compared with capacity. The most important driver of profit. See utilisation and profitability.
  • Sessions per charger per day.
  • Energy delivered (kWh) per charger, per site and per month.
  • Average session length and energy per session.
  • Peak-hour usage: when chargers are busiest, and whether drivers queue.

Reliability

  • Uptime: share of time each charger is available.
  • Failed session rate: sessions that did not start or stopped early.
  • Time to respond and time to fix after a fault.
  • Repeat faults by charger or part.

See why uptime is the product.

Money

  • Revenue per charger, per site and per kWh.
  • Gross margin per kWh: price minus electricity and payment costs.
  • Electricity cost, including demand charges.
  • Operating cost per site: maintenance, software, rent, support.
  • Payback period and return on investment for each site.

Customers

  • Unique and repeat users: are drivers coming back?
  • New users from roaming partners.
  • Support requests per 100 sessions, and their main causes.
  • Ratings and reviews in charging apps.

How to calculate site ROI

  1. Total investment: hardware, installation, grid connection and approvals.
  2. Yearly net income: revenue minus electricity, operating costs and revenue share.
  3. Payback period: investment divided by yearly net income.
  4. ROI over the charger's life: total net income minus investment, divided by investment.

Turning KPIs into action

  • Low utilisation: review location, visibility, pricing and fleet partnerships.
  • Low uptime: improve maintenance or replace unreliable hardware.
  • High utilisation with queues: add chargers or power.
  • Low margin: check tariffs, demand charges and pricing.

EVee Buddy's dashboards track these KPIs for every charger and site, with regular reports for owners and investors.
