Site selection checklist: grid capacity, dwell time, traffic and visibility

8 Oct 2026 · 5 min read · EVee Buddy Team

The most important decision in a charging project is where to put it. A great site with average chargers will outperform an average site with great chargers. Use this checklist to judge a location.

1. Grid capacity

  • What is the current sanctioned load, and how much is spare?
  • Is there a transformer nearby, and does it have capacity?
  • How long would a supply upgrade take, and who pays for it?
  • How far is the power source from the planned parking bays?

Power often decides the timeline and budget, so check it first.

2. Dwell time

  • How long do visitors typically stay?
  • Does the stay match the charger power you plan to install?
  • Is there something to do while charging: food, shopping, restrooms, Wi-Fi?

3. Traffic

  • How many vehicles pass or visit daily?
  • Is the site on a highway, a city corridor or a destination route?
  • Are there fleets, cabs or delivery hubs nearby that need charging?
  • Where are the nearest competing chargers, and how busy are they?

4. Visibility and access

  • Can drivers see the chargers from the road or entrance?
  • Is entry and exit easy, including for larger vehicles?
  • Is the area well lit and safe at night?
  • Is the site open 24 hours, or at least at the times drivers need it?

5. Practical details

  • Mobile network coverage for charger connectivity and payments.
  • Space for future chargers.
  • Protection from flooding and heavy rain.
  • Clear agreement with the landowner on use of the bays.

Score and compare

Rate each candidate site on these points and compare them side by side. The site with the best mix of power, dwell time, traffic and visibility is usually the one to build first.
