A charging site succeeds when the chargers match the people who use them. Before picking hardware, these six questions shape every decision that follows.
1. Who will charge here?
Highway travellers, office staff, hotel guests, residents and fleet vans all behave differently. Knowing your main users tells you how fast the chargers need to be.
2. How long do they stay?
Dwell time is the key number. Drivers who stay all day are well served by AC charging. Drivers who stop for 20 to 40 minutes need DC fast charging.
3. How much power does the site have?
Your existing electrical connection decides what you can install without upgrades. A site assessment checks your sanctioned load, transformer capacity and space for panels and cables.
4. Where will the chargers go?
Chargers should be easy to find, well lit and close to the power source to keep cable runs short. Think about how vehicles will enter, park and leave.
5. Who will run it day to day?
Chargers need monitoring, maintenance, payments and driver support. You can run this yourself with a charge point management system, or hand it to a managed service partner.
6. How will you grow?
Plan cable routes and electrical capacity for more chargers later. Adding guns is far cheaper when the groundwork is already done.
